Lift Campaign
GREAT NEWS : THE LIFT CAMPAIGN IS HISTORY - the new lift opened at Wimbledon Park tube station in September 2021. Spacious and smooth, and very welcome for travellers with prams buggies suitcases or other reasons for needing a lift. Thank you TfL.
In 2011, The Cresidents started a campaign for a lift at Wimbledon Park underground station.
At a meeting at the station with The Cresidents, TfL officers explained the general approval process, and confirmed that a lift would be feasible at the station. Costs would exceed £5 million, and Wimbledon Park was not expected to have funding priority for some time. Factors included the very high costs TfL give for the work, the criteria used to determine priority, the comparatively low traffic volumes at Wimbledon Park compared to other stations needing access works, and the constraints in government spending at the time. In January 2018 TfL announced that Wimbledon Park would have a lift installed as one of 13 more stations to have step free access by 2022. Work started in late 2019 and is now completed - photo of the framework being installed in August 2020 below right.
